This course is designed for students who want to learn German from the ground up. The class is taught over a multi-year period by our beginning German instructor cadre. This is a text-based course (see details about the texts via the links underneath the textbook images) that covers all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. All fundamental grammatical concepts are presented over the course of the class.
We offer a class for students with no prior German learning experience. However, if you are new to the Tri-State German-American School but have had some German before, feel free to join the course "in progress." Use the class starting points above and the listing of the grammar points covered in each chapter of Wie geht’s? and Vorsprung linked from the pictures of the textbooks to the left to choose the level best suited to your needs.
And don't worry about getting stuck in the wrong class: switching to a different level is easy.
Note: There will be some overlap between the end of one year and the beginning of the next. Also, the amount of material covered in any one year is dependent on the make-up of that year's class.
All beginners’ classes (except Renate’s and Brett’s Saturday morning class) will be using Vorsprung (4th edition, ISBN 978-0-357-03698-3 [text only; bundled packages have different ISBNs]). If you are ordering the text directly from the publisher (Cengage), please note that you can save money by ordering the text bundled with the online Mindtap feature. While we aren't planning on using the online platform, the price for the bundle is appreciably less expensive than purchasing the text alone. And remember you'll be using the text for at least four years in case the price seems a bit daunting.
Renate’s and Brett’s Saturday morning beginners’ classes will continue to use Wie geht’s? (9th Edition, ISBN 978-0-495-79764-7), which is available online in used and new formats.
Be Sure To Check The Edition Number When Ordering Either Text From Secondary Sources Because There Are Multiple Editions Currently In Circulation.

Vorsprung, Review Chapter 5 - Rick Manoff -Online
Like its Saturday morning cousin, this course is designed for students who want to learn German from the ground up. TSGAS is committed to offering at least two years of this multi-year course and will add more years if there is sufficient interest in continuing the course. This is a text-based course (see details below about the text) that covers all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
The class uses Vorsprung (4th edition, ISBN 978-0-357-03698-3 [text only; bundled packages have different ISBNs]). If you are ordering the text directly from the publisher (Cengage), please note that you can save money by ordering the text bundled with the online Mindtap feature. While we aren't planning on using the online platform, the price for the bundle is appreciably less expensive than purchasing the text alone. And remember you'll be using the text for at least two years in case the price seems a bit daunting.
Note: Registered students will receive a Zoom invitation from the course instructor prior to the first class session.
