This series of courses is for students 17+ just beginning their journey in exploring the German language and culture. It is divided into four courses designed to build a solid foundation in German language competency with 200 instructional hours spread over a four-year period. This is a text-based course that covers all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Students who have no prior experience with the German language should enroll in the Beginner A1.1 class. If you have had some prior experience and are not sure where you should place, you can find quick and free online placement tests which use the CEFR to help give you an idea of your level. You can find one on your own or use one linked here on the Goethe Institut or the Deutsche Welle websites. You can also follow this link to the assessment grid provided by the CEFR for Languages website.
Textbook Purchase: Textbooks for beginner and intermediate courses follow the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages. For your convenience, TSGS is able to offer textbooks for purchase during break (Kaffee Pause) at the beginning of the school only. If you join the class at a later time or during the 2nd semester, please purchase the textbook through a national retailer (i.e. Amazon).
NOTE: If you find the course you registered for too simple or too challenging, you can easily transfer to a higher or lower-level course.
